Micro-Housing Makes a Comeback

Micro-housing

Micro-housing has more than doubled in recent years.

Micro-housing is all the rage on the West Coast, according to data from StorageCafe. These units are slightly larger than the typical, average hotel room in the U.S., and seven of the top 10 markets with the highest share of micro-units are out west.

Once sought after for affordability, micro-housing is now making a push due to lifestyle habits. In the 2000s, micro-units of 441 square feet and under made up 1.1% of the market, and now in the 2020s, it has jumped to 2.4%.

San Francisco, Seattle, Honolulu and Portland, Ore., each had more than 10% of the market designated as micro-housing. Seattle has 66% of its units under construction that can be considered micro-housing.

The three cities not out west were Minneapolis at five, Chicago at eight and Philadelphia at 10. Meanwhile, Boston (56.2%) and Newark, N.J. (49.8%) also expect to have micro-housing hit around 50% of under-construction units.
