Certain postsecondary credentialing expenses are now covered under the qualified tuition program (QTP) known as a “529 plan.” Since the signing of The One Big Beautiful Bill in July 2025, eligible education includes expenses for credentialing programs such as tuition, fees, books, supplies and other equipment needed for attendance in a postsecondary program like the National Apartment Association Education Institute’s (NAAEI) Certificate for Apartment Maintenance Technicians (CAMT). This update also includes postsecondary testing requirement fees and continuing education fees. Qualified expenses incurred during the taxable year also increased from $10,000 to $20,000.

The CAMT program is a specialized pathway for maintenance techs and supervisors— those responsible for maintaining, preserving and enhancing the community—searching to develop, improve and maintain skills to boost their confidence and reputation.

The CAMT program is designed to prepare participants for their real-world positions in the rental housing industry. The curriculum includes topics such as compliance, facilities operations and other essential trade skill training.
