Residents Staying in Homes Longer

Americans staying put

People are moving less often than in past years.

Americans are staying put at a historic rate. According to Point2Homes, 11%, or one in nine, of people moved in 2024. That's down from one in five in the 1960s. And, those moving aren't going far as only 19.3% of movers went out of state, down from more than 20% the year prior.

Higher homeowner rates than in past years and economic instability are among the reasons Americans aren't moving. New Jersey witnessed the fewest movers at under 8% of the population—New York was second at 8.5%. Meanwhile, Alaska had the most movers at 14% of the population.

Texas (3.97 million) and California (3.75 million) were the states with the most people who moved. Florida (2.79 million) was the only other state with at least 2 million movers.

At a local level, Las Vegas had the most out-of-state movers, percentage-wise, at nearly one in three people coming from elsewhere. New York City had the most movers from other states at 143,496. Chicago (70,154) was the only other city with more than 50,000 out-of-state movers.
