Former Connecticut Mayor Provides Housing Affordability Insight

Now NAA's Director of External Affairs and Affiliate Engagement, April Capone discusses her perspective on housing policy.

Former Mayor of East Haven, Conn., April Capone is providing some insights on housing affordability. In a guest article, "From Town Hall Up: Why Housing Affordability Starts Locally," for the National League of Cities, Capone discusses how these challenges are not just at the national level. They can be found at the mayor's office, as Capone is well aware, or in other municipal or commissioner offices that concern different, of-the-moment issues such as zoning requirements.

"Housing is a pragmatic issue at the local level," writes Capone, who is now Director of External Affairs and Affiliate Engagement with the National Apartment Association. "It forces elected officials to confront tradeoffs, manage scarce resources and respond directly to the people affected by their decisions. That practical mindset is exactly why state and federal leaders must focus on enabling local action rather than constraining it in the year ahead."
