Affordable Housing Construction Sets New Mark

Affordable housing construction has continued to climb in recent years.
Nearly 310,000 affordable apartments have been completed since 2020, and almost 14% of all the total units constructed in 2024 were income-restricted. Meanwhile, that share was under 9% 10 years ago.
Seattle and New York City led the way with more than 14,000 new affordable apartments between 2020-24. Austin, Texas, was third with 13,300 apartments. Minnesota's Twin Cities, Atlanta and Denver were the only other metros with at least 10,000 new affordable apartments.
San Antonio (222%), Phoenix (206%) and Charlotte (191%) had the highest percentage increase of affordable apartments during the five-year period.
